Various dental colleges cannot encourage students of dental or dental hygiene curriculums to develop into a general dentist and focus on seniors since the age group for fresh graduates to receive the most return, fiscally speaking, is 35 to 45 years.
There has been progress made. Many of the general dentists around the United States are practicing with the elderly by volunteering with and creating groups that make home visits and serve the older population. Mobile Care Group Inc, a Sylvania corporation that got its start in 2006 by offering medical professional skills to nursing homes and assisted-living homes in Ohio and lower Michigan, works with retirement homes that have difficulties getting the occupants the dental care they want. The group accepts helpers and employs support from dentists looking to prepare for the storm of new patients inevitably coming their way.
